Tabs: How to Create Tabs in a Room

Written by Nadav Weiss

Feature Summary

Tabs sit at the top of an Aligned Room and group related sections, so buyers can find what they need without scrolling through one long page. Every Room is created with a set of starter tabs — Overview, Files, Plan (the Mutual Action Plan), and a seller-only Internal tab — and you can add up to ten custom tabs on top of them. Buyers see each new tab as soon as you create it, because tabs added in the Aligned app are visible immediately. Adding a tab requires Edit mode in the Room.

Prerequisites

  • Plan: All plans. Adding a tab from a saved tab template requires Pro or Enterprise.

  • Role: Room owner or internal Room collaborator.

  • Technical: The Room must be in Edit mode.

How to add a blank tab

Add a blank tab when you want to build the tab's content from scratch in this Room.

  1. Open the Room.

  2. Enter Edit mode.

  3. Click the + icon at the end of the tab row.

  4. Choose to create a blank tab.

  5. Click the new tab's name and enter the name buyers will see.

  6. Add sections to the tab.

A tab created from scratch is named New by default. Rename it before buyers open the Room, because the tab is visible to them as soon as you create it.

How to add a tab from a saved template

Add a tab from a saved tab template when your team reuses the same tab structure across Rooms — for example a Security or Kick-Off tab. Saved tab templates are available on the Pro and Enterprise plans.

  1. Open the Room.

  2. Enter Edit mode.

  3. Click the + icon at the end of the tab row.

  4. Choose From a template.

  5. Select one or more templates to add.

The tab arrives with its sections already built. Templates save structure only — not assignees, due dates, or other user-specific data.

What buyers see

Buyers see a new tab in the Room's tab row immediately after you create it, along with any sections inside it. Buyers do not see the seller-only Internal tab, and they do not see any tab you have hidden. To build a tab privately, create it and then hide it until the content is ready — see Hiding and Showing Tabs.

Adding a tab in the Aligned app vs. through Aligned MCP

Both the Aligned web app and Aligned MCP add tabs to a Room. The difference that matters is visibility: a tab added in the app is visible to buyers right away, while a tab added through Aligned MCP is hidden from buyers until you make it visible in the app.

Limitations

  • Maximum custom tabs: Ten custom tabs per Room, on top of the starter tabs.

  • Starter tabs: The Internal, Files, and Plan tabs are created with the Room and cannot be deleted.

  • Tab types you can add: General tabs only. You cannot create a second Plan tab, Files tab, or Internal tab.

  • Saved tab templates: Pro and Enterprise only. Files, Plan, and Internal tabs cannot be saved as templates.

  • Adding multiple templates to multiple Rooms at once: Not supported.

  • What happens at the ceiling: ⚠️ Aligned prevents you from adding an eleventh custom tab. The exact UI behavior at the limit is not documented — needs a product check.

Troubleshooting & FAQ

Expected errors and blocks

⚠️ You have reached the maximum number of tabs
What this means: The Room already contains ten custom tabs, which is the maximum, so no further tabs can be added. (⚠️ Placeholder — exact UI copy needs confirmation.)

How to fix it: Delete a custom tab you no longer need, or move its sections into an existing tab, then add the new tab.

How to avoid it: Keep three to six buyer-facing tabs. Rooms with many tabs are harder for buyers to navigate long before the limit becomes a problem.

"From a template" is not available
What this means: Saved tab templates are a Pro and Enterprise feature, so accounts on other plans can add blank tabs only.

How to fix it: Add a blank tab and build its sections, or contact your Aligned account team about Pro or Enterprise access.

Unexpected errors

Q: Why did my new tab not appear in the Room?
A new tab appears in the tab row immediately, so a tab that does not appear usually means the change did not save. Refresh the Room and check the tab row again. If the tab is still missing, contact Aligned support with the Room name and the tab name you tried to create.

FAQ

Q: Can I add a tab to a Room after it has been shared with buyers?

You can add a tab to a Room at any time, including after the Room has been shared. Buyers see the new tab the next time they load the Room.

Q: Will buyers see a new tab before I finish adding content to it?

Buyers see a tab created in the Aligned app as soon as you create it, including a tab with no sections in it yet. Hide the tab while you build it, then show it to buyers when the content is ready.

Q: How many tabs can I add to a Room?

You can add up to ten custom tabs to a Room, on top of the Overview, Files, Plan, and Internal tabs the Room is created with.

Q: Can I reuse a tab I built in another Room?

Save the tab as a tab template on a Pro or Enterprise plan, then add it to any other Room through +From a template. See Saved Tab Templates.

Q: Can I add a second Plan or Files tab?

The Plan, Files, and Internal tabs are created with the Room and cannot be added a second time. Tabs you create are General tabs.

Pro Tips

  • Create the tab, hide it, then build it. Buyers see a new tab the moment it exists, and an empty tab in a shared Room reads as an unfinished Room.

  • Name tabs by buyer intent — Overview, Plan, Security, Pricing — rather than by internal team language.

  • If your team builds the same tab in every Room, save it once as a tab template and add it from +From a template instead of rebuilding it.
